Build an Archery Target
Chuck Holloway

Targets are one of the key elements that make up the sport of archery. Without the target what would archers aim for? A target is the final objective and goal in the sport. The game of archery would serve no purpose without the target!

Targets can be purchased at most any sporting goods store. You might even luck out and find some targets in stock at a variety of different specialty stores. If strapped for time you can venture online and find a retailer that will ship the archery targets to your doorstep within 24 hours.

If you are the typical outdoorsman and want to take the DIY approach, building a archery target is relaively simple. The archery target can be built using scrap material that you may have laying around the house. The following instructions give you a step by step guide to building your own archery targets:

1. The first step is to come up with a template for your target that is at least 3 feet in diameter. A piece of cardboard works perfectly for the template. Proceed to cut out two circles which will serve as a diagram for your target.

2. You will need to gather miscellaneous items that will be used for packing material. Old rugs and used foam work great. The materials will need to be lined up with the target template and should be piled up to a height of 7-10" tall.

3. The materials will need to be packed inbetween the two cardboard templates and glued into place.

4. The edges of the cardboard will need to be pierced with a sharp object in order to make holes large enough for a thick string. Take the string and weave the edges of the target together making sure the material is packed solidly.

5. The last step is to create a stand for your archery target. The stand should have three legs and be able to withstand the force of an arrow being fired from a bow.

As you can see, an archery target can be built using spare materials around the house. There are also many resources on the internet where you can find target models that can be printed off and used as a template.
